Brooklyn is in New York. Also, actual book bans are unconstitutional under the first amendment. What these laws do is prohibit state funded entities like public schools and public libraries in the state from having the books available. The books are still available in privately owned places.

We also have a problem on lemmy that there is a subset of users who think that votes are how you curate your feed. They downvote anything that they don’t want to see instead of blocking communities that they aren’t interested in.

Using scaled sorting really helps with getting smaller communities on the front page. I still see the political and news communities but I also see communities for cities and niche hobbies.

Elaine Kagen. She can step down from SCOTUS and let Biden nominate her replacement. She has good national name recognition and lots of public writing on every important topic. She would trounce Trump in a debate. It’s basically impossible to challenge her qualifications. She is a little older at 64 but much younger than Trump or Biden. She’s actually a little short of the normal retirement age. I actually prefer Sotomayor and thought of this for her but she’s a little older than Kagen.

Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen. He was born in Canada but his mother was an American citizen who met residency requirements to pass citizenship to him so he was a US citizen at birth.

The first time I watched a true crime documentary it scared the crap out of me. I was eight, I think, and it was about Jack the Ripper. I watched it in a small dark smokey lounge in the back of a funeral home with some other kids of similar age and then had to run out to the car alone probably around 10:30pm or so.

I’m surprised you have so much trouble with Thai restaurants. The Thai government trains chefs and sends them around the world to operate restaurants and it has a government owned restaurant supply company to support them. They do it as a form of “cultural diplomacy”. Because of that Thai tends to be one of the most consistent and authentic types of restaurants.

I started on kbin.world and really liked it, there are several features I much prefer on Kbin vs Lemmy like being able to see the activity log for comments and posts. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend new users start there anymore. Ernest is awesome but it seems like he’s got some stuff going on IRL and he doesn’t seem to want to share development responsibilities. He was accepting some more help and putting together a small team so maybe it’s gotten better since I switched to lemm.ee but especially back around December and January there were periods where he was absent for extended periods and issues weren’t getting fixed until they had some time to snowball into big issues and he was stuck spending more time on playing catchup from that than working on improvements. I didn’t try Mbin but it seems like that might be the better choice for the time being if someone wanted to start using that part of the fediverse.

Honestly, I don’t get it. I saw the total eclipse in '17 and I’ve seen a couple of partial eclipses and they weren’t particularly exciting. I live about 10 min outside of the total eclipse path and I’m not even sure I’m going to walk outside for it. What am I missing? Why are people spending thousands of dollars to see it?

How do you feel about true crime? In Cold Blood is a classic and a very engaging read. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is quite good and the killer had not been identified when the book was written. The Poisoner’s Handbook gets into the origins of forensic science. The Blood of Emmett Till successfully presents Emmett Till is a human being while still framing his murder as the significant cultural event that it became. This last one is a bit controversial but If I Did It is very well written and very strange to read. The ghost writer’s commentary adds to the book in very meaningful ways.

It’s not just phrased poorly, it’s not a true statement. It’s a conservative talking point that does not bear out when you look at the federal budget. Republican Presidents and Congresses increase spending at least as much as Democratic Presidents and Congresses. Both parties are big spenders. Despite this and related talking points, Republicans are the less fiscally responsible party because while increasing spending they tend to enact policies that reduce growth in revenue.

I like to imagine that Discovery takes place in the Kelvinverse rather than the main timeline.
