Linux Mint Cinnamon is pretty similar to Windows 7 out of the box as far as how it works. Can probably find something to download to make it match Windows 7 in start menu configuration.

My spouse was able to transition to using Mint from Windows without any problems.

Is their hardware a 32 or 64 bit system? If its old enough to be 32 then (from the smarter people about tech security) its not going to play nice with the more modern security stuff that requires 64bit systems. (I’ve got an ancient 32bit netbook that can do basic internet stuff on text pages but won’t play well with much else.) Might need to find a cheapo refurbished office computer, should be able to get away with finding them for a few hundred after shipping. Maybe less if you’re close enough to a city government or university that sells their old stuff but requires that you physically pick it up yourself.

I remember the endgame of the original and the feeling of disappointment at the loot that the final boss dropped and after a week or so it popped into my brain that the disappointing loot might have been “the point”. Came back to it years later and the steam version was “upgraded for free” to the enhanced version or something that changed the loot that was dropped into something “good” and felt it took something away from finishing the game.

Also, very much appreciated wandering around on a planet completely stripped (at a global level) by industrial exploitation into a mostly collapsed ecology.

If I took a book that had 1 millions characters in its text and overlapped each character on the same spot on the same page, but otherwise made no other changes, all the “parts” of the book are there but its meaning has changed.

Kinda like trying to read something in a dream. I’ll open a book, look at the page, and see gibberish but “know” that the text is supposed to be saying something specific. If I was able to write down the gibberish and give it to somebody else to read, they wouldn’t get the same meaning out of it.
