That’s it. Our instance requires us to stop responding if you explicitly ask us to. It’s right here buried in our Code of Conduct
Any discussions may be opted out of by disengaging.
In the past, this rule has only applied to the specific user you say it to. I’d like to suggest going forward that if someone on another instance uses it, we treat it as applying to all of us.
Unfortunately this rule wasn’t communicated clearly before, so I’m making this post for visibility.
Edit: As the comments clarify, this has to be done in good faith, typically just a one word “disengage” comment. If you add more stuff to the discussion and then say “disengage” at the end, you’re not disengaging, it’s a way to put a stop to a toxic argument not to get the last word in.
This is dumb. There’s basically no scenario where this would be used in good faith.
It has been, but it’s been amongst local users who were already arguing.
It’s good internally cuz it helps people from getting into stupid internet arguments
imo i feel like the disengage rule should really only apply amongst comrades. it will just be used to silence us otherwise and the libs have plenty of ways to do that without us handing them another
plus giving the libs a magic debate-winning word seems like it validates their worldview a bit too much, idk
yeah. it makes sense to prioritize peace and unity among comrades, but between comrades and liberals maybe we should prioritize getting the message out.
maybe it works as long as “disengage” is a single word comment

“You have spent this entire conversation being wrong and evil. Now that I’ve proven that FACT using indisputable deductive logic, you’re trying to ad hominem me, which I do NOT take lightly. You are a coward and a simpleton. I am disengaging now. Do NOT reply to me or you WILL be in violation of Hexbear CoC Section I, subsection r. An authoritarian like yourself should know something about respecting rules, but somehow I doubt you will. I repeat. DISENGAGE. DISENGAGE FROM ME. CEASE AND DESIST. DISENGAGE YOU FUCKING COWARD. DIS. EN. GAGE.”

This came up as an alternative to blocking when we lacked a block feature. Since everybody has a block feature now, it probably just makes sense to use that, though there are cases where it is preferable to just tell someone to drop it instead of blocking them. Anyway, it is still the rule.
tbh if you blocked everyone that was ever annoying on hexbear this site would be a ghost town lmao
Petition to get a Meredith from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City disengaging emote
You do have to actually disengage though, to be clear. No “I disengage, but also [fuck you, x,y,z, trying to get the last word]”. If you’re disengaging, it has to be mutually respected.
You cannot Sage Hexbear, this isn’t /b
Uh, what? The rule is not saying that you need to write “disengage”, it’s telling you to disengage. As in, go outside and touch grass
Nope, that is not the case.
You might be removed. Disengage.
I think this rule could be clarified to say that you can reply “disengage” and not engage further or whatever. The way this reads it’s literally just “stop replying”. Also I’ve never heard of this rule and I’ve been here for 3 years. I really can’t tell if this is a bit or not right now.
It’s not a bit, this is a site rule that has been around for a long time though not everyone’s heard about it. It was primarily for before we had a block feature but it’s still in effect.
Thats why i play rogue and can disengage as a bonus action
You know, now that we have a block button I don’t see the need for “disengage” anymore.
Me on the other hand
Nooooooo don’t tell them our secrets
engage!
Any discussions may be opted out of by disengaging.
I have always interpreted that as meaning YOU have to disengage, not that you can tell other people to “disengage”. People here have tried to end an argument by telling other to disengage while they keep on arguing, which is just a cheap attempt to get the last word.
The person asking to disengage has to disengage as well. Ideally the format is just saying “disengage” and the other person leaves it at that
You could just disengage by, yah know, not replying. What’s the point of saying “disengage”?

I actually kind of agree with you on this one, but some people don’t have the self control to do this when they’re in the midst of a heated argument
-
It also covers cases where one person does that but the other person keeps replying to them elsewhere in the thread or in another thread, keeping the argument going
-
And also we didn’t have a block function then, if you really need someone to get off your ass then there had to be some way to handle it and this is what was decided on
It also covers cases where one person does that but the other person keeps replying to them elsewhere in the thread or in another thread, keeping the argument going
Well yeah I agree with that, should be bannable. But fell like there’s more eloquent ways of initiating it than saying “disengage” flatly to someone. Comes off as a bit of a condescending way to end a convo.
I didn’t really like the rule when it was proposed and I don’t think that it ever really worked as well as it was intended to, but eh, its fine
-
You’re interpretation is correct. Saying disengage to end an argument has never been enforced.
The only time something similar is enforced is when a user follows the person they are replying to into different comments and threads.
