So just stop oil then. Who are they asking to “just stop oil”? The people getting rich from it? They’re not gonna stop because you ask nicely. You’re gonna have to make them.
These people don’t respond to public pressure. They only understand that the line is going up. If you want the line to go down, you’re going to have to increase costs. These industries have a lot of very expensive poorly guarded infrastructure so it really isn’t that hard to increase costs.
I’m sure most people know that, so again, why don’t you just stop oil then. I’m adverse to long prison sentences so if you’re so passionate for the cause, go nuts.
But they won’t. They’ll protest and make a fuss and then drive home in their cars like the rest of us. And that’s pretty annoying.
Now you’re just being hyperbolic 😅
And when their powers combine, they form megaorca, eater of cruise ships.
Then there would be fewer of them, which is objectively better for all life on this planet. Seems fine tbh.
It’s a combination of factors. That could be one of them. There’s also the onset of an El Nino climate pattern, the reversal of the aerosol cooling effect from changes to low sulphur shipping fuels, spiking methane emissions, some effect from the water vapour injected into the stratosphere by that underwater volcano a few years back, and we seem to be speed-running past tipping points. It’s a lovely potpourri of doom we have wrought.

Great update, as always 👍
Yeah but who cares? Twitter was dead the second Elon bought it and we all knew it.
So full economic collapse then…
$250,000 a seat tourist submarine… The ocean can have them.
Kinda hilarious that Butler thought everyone would lose their homes to drugged up pyromaniacs rather than the reality: the homes will still exist just no one will be able to afford to live in them. Maybe she figured that this would be too unbelievable for readers to engage with.
I suspect the US’s path might be like Parable, with a big spoonful of The Water Knife and a dash of Ministry of the Future.
No it can’t
Well just air drop them a good indica and we’ll have this whole thing sorted in a week.
I get your point, but I think the image you have in your head of rustic countryside life, hard work and an honest living isn’t the reality these child slaves are part of.
Seems a bit less terrible when you inherit the farm at some point, for one. Second, one would assume that parents would take steps to prioritize their child’s health and safety and wow do they not do that on industrial farms. And third, can’t be an honest living if you’re not actually being paid, you know, a living.
I don’t think both sides are experiencing cognitive dissonance. In practice, they both appear to be working against the interests of the working class.
Seems like the humans are in a bit of a pickle.
On one hand they can keep using fossil fuels, and that will allow some humans to live more comfortably while they pump so much planet warming gasses into the climate system that it guarantees the future sterilization of the planet.
On the other hand, they could mandate a planet-wide ban on fossil fuels, which would be problematic because their food system is entirely reliant on fossil fuels, without which they could only feed about one billion humans.
Or maybe they will choose to gamble, and attempt to exert their control of the climate system through stratospheric injection of sulphate aerosols. It will be neat to see what possible unanticipated consequences this leads to!
Well whatever the humans choose, just know that we’re all rooting for you! 🍿🎉
Tech needs a union. Yes, tech workers get paid pretty well. But we really need more say in how the products of our labour are being used. I don’t know how to work in this industry and be an ethical person anymore, and “change from within” doesn’t work when you don’t have a seat at the big boys’ table.
When I started my career, I thought the internet would bring knowledge and enlightenment. It was a just cause. I guess I was just another brainwashed tech utopian. Now it’s getting hard to find a job building something that isn’t an obvious scam or a way to fuck over the working class.
