Both vampire survivors and Hero Siege are great games that perform on my laptop, a 2014 Fujitsu built for business. Both are pixel graphics. Vampire being a rogue lite and hero siege being top down 2d version of Diablo 2 or 3.

I feel this. I found time during the start of the winter sale to buy Vampire survivors and their expansions and found I hadn’t touch some games since about 2018.

While true, this puts a lot of the assumptive burden on a lot of “normal/average humans” that don’t look beyond the desktop or browser to know more about How the OS works. That being said I agree with you and this should be higher.

The issue with Linux is that the best way to run jellyfin is to use docker (setup and running docker is its own thing that takes more time than I care to work on over lemmy). That way it’s Linux distro agnostic. With windows and Mac there is no issues as they have native apps from the server side that gets timely updates.

some options have instructions. Some options require you to be able to understand how to install software specific to a Linux distro and the windows/Mac options should be easy to install and understand.

The Linux distro you want to use will depend on you, but each service has their own preferences.

The end goal of installing all of this is to stream from your server client to the player client software. The server client software will have options on how you want the server seen on your internal network (intranet) and if you want to be able to access the server outside your network, say on your phone on the go (internet). The server clients will also ask you about where they need to look to find the media files you wish to stream locally or outside your network. plex and jellyfin have all of this and more to mess around with, but if you are just doing this at home no need to explore too much if you don’t need to.

There are a few frontend/backend solutions that you can pick from that are popular and well supported.

Plex and jellyfin are my picks as those are what I’ve used. They will work on any laptop or desktop running windows/mac/Linux (with some caveats).

The front end that you pick can be a steaming device like a Amazon fire stick, Roku, or AppleTV, this also includes smart TVs, (not all TVs support all or any) for widest support an Android tv would work).

As for where to get your media files there are a lot of options out there, but be careful (I don’t know the this instance’s stance on site recommendations so I can’t list them). As for how, torrenting is still the most popular, but not the only option. You’ll need a torrent program to get the files to download to your “server”. It is also very encouraged and recommended to use a vpn while you download and seed to protect yourself.

I waited to see if anyone mentioned it, but, POD. A old 1997 racing game from Microsoft built by Ubisoft. You can get the gold edition on GoG for rather cheap but I would absolutely love to see a remaster or remake. Unfortunately I would rather it not be made by Ubisoft as I don’t want to be forced into a separate account login setup from Ubisoft.

Every section had missing downloads. But with some web inspection, I found some interesting obfuscation using what I think is JavaScript on the web pages that “used” to hold the download links, for the files that were requested to be removed. If we can figure out how to reverse the code to reveal the link again we could grab (assuming they are still on the server) the files manually.

I can confirm that the script still works, but sadly the site owner of Vim has removed the file from the server. The script sees a file link but will download nothing. When testing the script with just NES, it will see a game, but will throw an error of “remote files name has no length”, so going forward you could test via a vpn and see if they adjusted their files to be available via a country that doesn’t care, or they just haven’t gotten around to cleaning up their file directory list post removal.

P.S. the script showed that 23 field failed to download so one can assume those files were the one Nintendo decided to have them remove.

My server has movies ranging from 480p to 4k. Anything under 4k that is a movie shouldn’t be more than 2gb-3gb (this is also highly dependent on the movie in question, lotr movies can be huge so as long as it looks good I don’t mind, I have the space) when it comes to 4k movies it highly depends on the movie but I like to keep them below 10gb if I can.

When it comes to tv shows if it’s 1080p I expect long-form (1 hr) to be around 1-2gb. Less for shorter shows.

As far as bit rate and codecs are concerned keep things as simple as I can .h264 or .h265. My server doesn’t support AV1 so I can’t use that yet maybe in the future. .h265 high10 tends to make my server work too hard. I try to keep the bit rate on the low side as my server is a bit on the low end so a bit rate below 10mbps keeps the server happy and everything plays nice and snappy.

If you are getting a copy of the book and they say it’s from the hardback first edition or at least the hardback then you have a decent chance to find online resources that will tell you how many pages that particular edition had. If it’s a straight up epub from another source and not scans, then you could use some software to do a word comparison and see what the changes are/were between copies. Thankfully if it’s the book or series I think it is there were no abridged (shortening the book by removing parts that don’t contribute to the story) copies made that I’m aware of.

It’s the same issue for posts as well, at least for me. I have to click on the image in a post to see the animated version. But yes it’s much better now than before.

I use Mlem for my lemmy surfing. And the only way for the gif to be animated is if I click on the image to view it in the image viewer. Then it animates. Just food for thought.

My leaving Fedora and by extension RH, mostly is about not supporting in any meaningful capacity any associated with RH. My hope is to find something similar to Fedora, I’m getting a lot of recommendations about OpenSUSE tumbleweed and endeavorOS. Since my setup is AMD CPU/GPU it seems while not the perfect choice POP!_OS isn’t for me. I think as long as the distro supports vanilla Gnome or as close as possible would be great.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Fedora, but with the things they’ve done recently, I really don’t think what I want from an OS and RH wants are the same anymore. I’d prefer to separate from them while I have the opportunity before I’m invested to the point of staying because it’s too hard to migrate.

This sounds like what I’m looking for. What is their support for steam, blender, AMD CPU/GPU support, and do they use flatpak, or is it more of an APK setup?

I know I’m late to the conversation, but I stopped using Facebook 10 years ago. I left Reddit after Apollo stopped working, and now that Twitter is heading the same way I would prefer to not associate with them. I agree it stinks that it’s yet another platform that splits people up deciding how and whom they interact with, but I do not want meta to mess with something that works the way it should without corporate’s fingers in the cookie jar.

I might suggest you take a look at Jellyfin. similar to Kodi but I feel it has a polish that kodi lacks. I was in your position years ago, and I will always recommend either Plex or Jellyfin.
