    Here I go criticizing a greentext but…

What dumb take. Sure, I could understand the nostalgia for early internet days when it was the wild west but so much of this stuff wouldn’t have happened if only tech people used the internet. If your average person didn’t want to see the internet would Apple have made the iPhone? How much of Wikipedia would be filled if only tech dudes used the internet? Would you be able to watch anime with official subtitles instead of janky fan ones within an hour of release? Would most anime even get dubbed? Those streaming platforms oop hates produce content they probably watch, and in niche ways that wouldn’t be available anywhere else. I love the content on Dropout and would that exist without “normies”? Would collegehumor have ever existed?

Believe it or not, most people don’t understand how to use computers well and find it easier to trade money than to learn, especially from condescending dickheads like oop. Plus, it’s pretty rich for 4chan to complain about ruining things just because it makes someone unhappy. 4chan loves to do that to other websites, artists, social media, etc.

Without the people the tech wouldn’t grow, and without the tech people wouldn’t be here. It’s all a give and take.

The tech grew, but it was like a cancer

100% not worth it. Who cares about the latest iPhone? I want my damn privacy back.

I’m not sure what world you’re living in, but the average person has been using the internet since dial-up was publicly available. It’s not the 70’s where the idea of a computer is some fringe hardware. Shit, my rural redneck parents had a computer with an internet connection in the mid 90’s.

        the average person

From where? Which country? Which region?

In many countries the internet is still in the process of becoming commonplace. In my home country it was rare before the mid 2000s that someone had internet at home.

I live in a place where under 30% of people own a computer/laptop. Classic Anglocentric worldview in that top level comment.

Of course it’s “Anglocentric”. The internet was invented in the US, with help from other western nations, and many of the globally spanning services are provided by US companies.

It’d be like if I told a European that only wealthy vacationers ride trains because it’s incredibly expensive and there’s barely any routes. Meanwhile many other countries have highly developed and affordable public transportation systems. It’s not really valuable for me to make sweeping comments about it when my country is not involved in the innovation or execution of that market.

It’s just a matter of perspective.

I mean sure people use it but many people don’t fully grasp the whole system. Hell even the more techy ones barely scratch the surface of what there truly is but the fact many people. Many people are going to use things like youtube, any of the social media sites, etc. Their point was for them to use it well and they aren’t wrong. Many places I have worked I ended up falling back as the tech person since most people only know the bare basics even though their jobs relied on this kind of thing for a decade or two. People only pick up what they need to know.

A good example of their comment about

Believe it or not, most people don’t understand how to use computers well and find it easier to trade money than to learn,

I seen it pretty hardcore when stable diffusion came out. Lets just ignore the ethics of AI art (its messy and I’m not a huge fan of the commercialization but it is a fascinating technology). There are many interfaces that require just copying a folder and double clicking a bat file, then it runs with 0 problems (as long as you have a Nvidia gpu) but many people just don’t want to fuck about dealing with python or git, so they pay a subscription service to do their renders for them. Its not that hard to see people who will spend money to just solve a problem rather than work on it to make it work.

Apparently even zoomers are not that great with modern office technology even though they were the generation raised fully by modern tech.

Just because the zoomers (or any generation ) are born with tech doesn’t mean they’re any more likely to understand it than anyone else. If a person is incurious, as long as it just works they couldn’t give a shit less how it functions, and I’m not better than that when it comes to things outside of my knowledge domain (ie, I understand cars but only know how they work on a surface level and can operate them).

Growing up with a technology in no way means you understand it unless you actually have to understand it to use it. That was the whole reason that computers exploded into normies usage, because you no longer needed to understand stuff to be able to use them.

If you’re delicate and sensitive, a 4chan style community might not be the best choice for you.
