I had hope that this community would be a place where free thinkers would congregate and have open discussions about political issues. But at first glance it looks like a exact copy of r/politics. I lean left on the political scale but the constant republican/trump bashing is tiresome. Seems like this community has succumbed to the same fate. If I wanted heavy bias, I would just watch any major news station. Any suggestions on communities that discuss politics as a whole? Perhaps with an observatory viewpoint rather than a partisan one.

I feel a same. The Reddit exodus is not going to help things. All the r/politics users are going to move to c/politics.

First, please mark as [Meta] next time, as this would be remove for a violation of rule 1. But this is just a nitpick.

It’ll be hard to regulate constant republican/trump bashing. They’re so many news sources just bashing them for there problems. I’ll feature this to have a discussion in the comments on what to change. Right now it’s just an emulation of r/politics to allow migrating redditors feel at home in this community. But if you want change then let’s see what change you guys want and see if it’s a good idea.

I agree, regulating would be impossible due to nature of open discussion. I was just hoping that Lemmy would be like Reddit was 10 years ago. Its just such low hanging fruit and doesnt add to developing a discussion. Sorry about the format I wasnt sure if this type of post would even be allowed.

Unfortunately, that is the destiny of virtually every social media subreddit, chat room, or other group.

People tend to want to congregate with like-minded people, and it becomes especially easy for that to quickly devolve from a social group into an echo chamber. And as echo chambers grow and evolve, they tend to disapprove of dissenting opinions more and more. Anybody who has a dissenting opinion or otherwise is even willing to admit that maybe the other side has a point once in a while will quickly be seen as “traitors to the cause”. If you are not 100% with “us”, then you are 100% with “them”. There is no in between.

If this place takes off, the same will happen here. Subworlds, or whatever they’re called on here, will all have their own little niches with their own little echo chambers and their own little tribalism. It’s been that way since the dawn of social media, and it’s been that way since the dawn of time.

It is ironic that the internet was developed so people could hear and share ideas, and instead everybody largely just sought out their own little echo chambers. And even if you do find a small group of like minded individuals, that group is itself the exact echo chamber it seeks to avoid.

Sounds good to me. Still testing apps and settling in.

I’d welcome any debate grounded in reality supported by established science and facts.

I too lean left and I absolutely agree that the constant bashing from both sides is really annoying. This also doesn’t apply to american politics only (I’m from Germany).

Politics have turned into some weird twisted show of “see how bad the other party is” instead of “see what good our party has done.” Its surely is a circus and the public eats it up.

Because the Republicans are aggressively pushing this tribal culture war and it never should get normalized. They deserve to get called out on it.

No, it’s not. You’re not an enlightened tolerant and rational human being by claiming both sides are equally at fault.

Just one example: I’d agree with you, if both sides would make equally as many false claims. But that’s not the case..

It’s not “Only your side is bad and my side is good”. There ARE liars on both sides. But that shouldn’t lead to the conclusion that both sides are telling equally as much lies.

Why is that so important? Because you would totally miss out on the rhetorical tactics they use to push their agenda. Take Trump’s caravan, Hunter’s laptop, false election claims. All of them were lies, but had a massive impact. Show me equally as bad examples the Democrats use to push their narrative.

Also, you can check, if you are open minded or not with the help of something called falsifiability. Ask yourself:

            1. What kind of proof would change my mind about this?
            2. Is there substantial proof?
            3. (Don’t) change your mind.

Democrats are trying to say “see what good our party has done”. The problem is that the Republicans are shouting “See how bad the other party is” much, much louder.

Doesn’t matter how much of an adult you are trying to be. The screaming baby on the other side of the room that’s pulling a constant temper tantrum and throwing his toys around wildly is the one that’s going to get the attention.

Free thinkers do tend to bash bigoted authoritarian-following thinkers. If mods removed all partisan comments in a political subreddit or instance community, there’d be a sharp drop in thread activity. I think it’s fine having a mix of objective anaylsis and partisan opinion. I felt that way even back in my Republican days.

    Edit: minor corrections.

After letting this post marinate for a week, I can confidently say that this community is in fact just a clone of the biased echo camber that is r/politics. Im all for relevant news on politics but this isnt the place for that. Every post on the frontpage can be summed up as “republicans bad.”(except the one about Jake Paul’s energy drink lol) The world is too big to have such a narrow view. Lemmians, lemmitors, lemmitarians… stop buying in to the 2 party system. Look at the issue not the party tied to it.
