I’m curious as to what Fediverse folks prefer. Discord is kind of everywhere.

That isn’t solved by Matrix though.
I will add “a fucking chatroom where they ban you for political reasons and there’s at least 3 accounts testing the water for how much nazism they can get away with and if you report them to the mods/admins they say they don’t see it and then ban you for wasting their time.”
Discord. I have yet to find even one other family/friend that uses Matrix.
I tried using both, in an effort to migrate from Discord. However, after a period of trying to figure out a good workflow and set-up in Matrix—finding an “instance” to set-up an accounts, configuring a private room for me and my SO to have a private chat in, and all that—we just gave up when the instance we had accounts in just folded.
I would have wanted to move to Matrix but I’m just too smooth-brained for it, and so in Discord I stay (keeping in mind that it’s neither private nor safe to be there).
Everyone I know uses discord, and any attempt to try matrix with friends has more friction than discord. We often make use of streaming gameplay to each other, and I don’t know if that functionality works in matrix because we never get that far.
You know what they say, it’s easier to turn Matrix users into family than family into Matrix users
Matrix, obviously. If it’s not open source, I really don’t want to touch it.
I use both. All these matrix shills won’t admit that the public matrix chats are dead af and public discord communities are way more active. I’ve even tried Revolt and those chats, while more active than matrix, aren’t as active as discord.
whatever you say about discord, all i can hear is “you don’t own the data, you don’t control the servers, and the terms of service are subject to the whims of a for-profit corporation”
no feature set, and no “community” built on such a platform can convince me it’s worth my time to use it for anything more than bare utility. for instance, sometimes my pokemon tournaments require i join a discord. i install the app for the course of the tournament.
Both are way too complicated. Bring back AIM.
Internet Relay Chat.
Ok grandpa let’s get you back to bed
Mainly using messenger… Can’t get any of my friends (admittedly millennials) to move over to discord or even WhatsApp…
At least it beats using fucking Line, which is the dominant platform where I live. That app is pure cancer.
Sucks, but social life decides which platform you use.
I’m on both, the one friend I message on matrix conveniently also hosts our instance.
Nowadays I very rarely use discord (only for server voice channels, because it’s just better). The few chats I still have on discord are bridged into matrix.
For many of my friends it was easier moving them to Signal though instead of matrix.
This, signal is very good and nobody who isn’t interested in tech wants to try to understand multiple instances for a chat platform none of their friends use when they already have one that works
Signal kinda gets around that by being really easy to sign up to and being basically a drop in replacement for WhatsApp
Discord. My gaming communities exist only on Discord.
