Guess where? Unironically r/Save3rdPartyApps
The Reddit search for Lemmy also gives these privacy copy-pasta as top results when searching for Lemmy. I’m still betting that Reddit employees are involved in boosting these posts.
Very well said.
Two remarks however:
While every social network collects user data, that is an inherent design requirement, only Lemmy lets you see what they have on you, at all times. I personally prefer that to a system where spez and the like have to be trusted with it…
And also, they (the reddit staff) conflate a flagship instance with the network because they know they (the reddit crowd) actually often cannot understand the difference.
Edit: rephrased to make explicit who I meant by “they”.
Yup - and there’s always the issue with third parties storing this info. Reddit has been archived, for example; so no matter what Reddit Inc. does with your data, it’s still “on the internet”.
I suspect they do, in fact, understand the difference. And are intentionally conflating lemmy the platform with lemmy.ml the instance in order to dissuade people from using the platform, since they know that most people new to the platform wouldn’t understand the distinction.
Alright, yes, I should have been more precise. You are absolutely correct, they as the reddit staff hopefully understands the difference. I meant the second they as “the reddit crowd at large”, and I hate myself for having changed the meaning of the word mid-sentence. I’ll go edit that now, before being unable to refrain from slapping myself out of disappointment.
