Inspired by a post as I read while working an odd job to help pay the bills in my home: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/38653075?scrollToComments=true

I’m just reminded of how on Mastodon there was the #MastodonForHarris tag where people showed that they donated hundreds of dollars to Harris when she didn’t need it.

When people asked “Why are you donating to her, she doesn’t need your money, she is backed by the party. Why not donate to charity or your fellow mastodon people?” people said they couldn’t be sure of the truth of people who were asking for $5.

And then the libs changed it to #Mastodon4Harris when people kept calling out how they have the money for donating to rich politicians but not for low income human beings.

For what it’s worth, there’s an argument to be made that electing Harris would be better for more people than donating to any one individual. Look at the havoc being caused by Trump. So many people are now out of jobs. Minorities are being actively targeted. The EPA and FDA are going to be basically shuttered and people all over the world will be affected by our lower health and environmental protections, and possibly dying of preventable diseases as we make measles great again. Harris didn’t need more money, she needed better policies and platforms, but I can see how libs really thought they were doing the right thing. I hope things improve for everyone, but if I really thought my $5 could either go to one individual or legitimately stop fascism and protect the world, I know what I would do. For what it’s worth, I donated money I didn’t have to Bernie because I really believed in his fight. Would that money have done people in my community good, sure, heck it would’ve done me good, but at the time I thought it was the right move.

Sure and I agree, I personally voted for Harris and while I wasn’t the biggest fan of her, I would have prefered her in office compared to Trump and Musk. Harris probably wouldn’t have basically hollowed out the EPA/FDA.

Harris didn’t need more money, she needed better policies and platforms,

Agreed. She spent a lot of money from companies and lobbyists on her campaign and she didn’t need some random person on Mastodon/Twitter/Whatever giving her $100. If she talked about the polices people actually liked and didn’t court over the Chaney’s we might have her in office now.

but I can see how libs really thought they were doing the right thing. I hope things improve for everyone, but if I really thought my $5 could either go to one individual or legitimately stop fascism and protect the world, I know what I would do.

I don’t honestly. When people on Mastodon said “How do you have $100 to a politician who will never know you exist but not $10 for a person you follow on Mastodon?” liberals then complained and blocked and moved to a new hashtag to dodge being questioned. And then doubled down by blocking tags and people while saying they were doing the right thing and ignored the people who were needing help with rent and medical costs.

For what it’s worth, I donated money I didn’t have to Bernie because I really believed in his fight. Would that money have done people in my community good, sure, heck it would’ve done me good, but at the time I thought it was the right move.

I donated $2 to Bernie personally, mainly because he refused to take SuperPAC and lobbying money. Harris and Biden had no issues with that and had enough money to win elections and run campaign ads. But also I agree my personal $2 would have been better spent on someone near me that day.

Yea, seems like we’re basically on the same page re campaign donations. Unfortunately, telling people how/where to spend their money, especially when it’s money for donations, generally never goes well. The effective altruism movement would complain that the money would go further in other countries, so they should donate for malaria nets or well water, some animal rights people would say that genocide is being perpetrated against animals on a daily basis and the money should go to stop that, suicide prevention and the ACLU, there are so many things pulling people in so many directions. If you just can’t understand how someone not steeped in leftist politics would think that donating to Harris would be better on a global scale, I can’t make you understand that, but I hope that there’s not too much animosity there because those people are the closest things we have to allies, and they probably truly thought they were doing what was best.

I don’t know anyone who actually donates to a political party, and if I did I would try to get them to see how they are literally throwing money away.
