I started using Plasma 5 a smidge before devs were saying it was ready for primetime. That was my conversion from Gnome (which I was very happy to leave by then) and it’s been nothing but positive.
I will wait for the full release of Plasma 6, but I’m super excited for it. I still <3 Plasma 5.
Thank you KDE devs!
What Plasma 6 feature are you most excited for?
Nothing specific. When I first jumped from gnome I spent probably more than a year going “damn that was thoughtful” or “wow, that’s super convenient” as I discovered different features. As I said, I was an earlyish adopter of Plasma 5, and it was enjoyable just to watch it take shape.
I like what the KDE team does, and I like seeing Plasma continue to get better, so I’m just looking forward to a fresh new release, and discovering all the little niceties.
And bringing back the compiz style cube is pretty nice too. 😁
Maybe windows rules will now work properly instead of being buggy and delete themselves…fingers crossed Imho KDE is too big, there are so many cogwheels they miss the opportunity to actually polish each and every aspect.
e.g. why does KDE need a specific videoplayer?
Maybe this time I can get blur behind semi transparent windows to work 🤔
KDE and GNOME want to be full suites of software that offer a coherent look and whatnot.

This release KDE has actually focused on improving and fixing more than just adding features
MPV and VLC Flatpak both use Xwayland btw.
Clapper uses Wayland though.
never heard of clapper. Nothing is going to replace mpv for me.
Clapper is a GTK something GUI for MPV that doesnt look horrible ;D
Does it NEED a specific player or just come with a default?
I don’t understand the question?
you commented :
why does KDE need a specific videoplayer?
I have not seen anything that indicates KDE requires a specific video player. So I was asking does it NEED a specific player or just have a default that it is installed with?
it ships with one, if that answer your question.
‘Need’ as in why do they need to stretch their development resources to cover a video player when they’re already stretched thin and perfectly serviceable alternatives exist.
I have no actual idea, but that’s what was meant. My guess is they want everything written in Qt6 so it can all be portable to windows etc.
Will this affect SteamOS in any way? I guess the development on that is separate from KDE but I don’t really know.
Eventually valve will probably push a SteamOS update out with plasma 6. But it’ll be up to then when to do it.
